I found the game we just tried on Tolstoy's diaries. He was playing this game way back in 1840 with his brother Nikolai. They were standing up in a corner of the room, trying not to think of a white bear, and neither Tolstoy nor his brother were able to do it.
Later on, Dostoyevsky, another famous name of the Russian literature, wrote something very similar in his "Winter Notes on Summer Impressions": "Give yourself a task. Try not to think of the polar bear. You will see that it will occur to you in every minute."
