In recent years, we have experienced rapid technological advances. Some of these advances happen so quickly that before we can even adjust to a technology, a new one develops.
Computers that once were at the size of a room have become small enough to fit in to our pockets. And these innovations along with these developments did not and will not stop. Why is all this happening? To find solutions for the problems we, human kind have. So, do you think the only problem we face is computers not fast enough? Are our mobile phones not small or thin already?
Do not get this wrong. As someone who has "technology" in the name of his channel, I am one of the most enthusiastic people about these innovations. But these fancy threads can often estrange us from the more real and important issues. Fortunately, there's a word that excites me. This is a word that could remedy many of these problems: "Chemistry."
Actually, "alchemy" I would have liked to say, but how many of alchemists are left in our modern world? In addition, this concept fragmented into many different areas such as chemistry, metallurgy, physics, medicine, astrology, semiotics, mysticism, spiritualism, and art. It multiplied by segmentation. So, let's pick one and continue with "chemistry" for now.
Chemistry is the keystone of many advances in human history. It hasn't left the talks of the wise for thousands of years. Democritus talks about the "atom" and Plato about the "element". Aristo created the renowned "five elements" thesis. You may have heard of these names before. Now let me give you a name you probably have never heard of: Ebû Mûsa Câbir bin Hayyân. An alchemist whom lived in the 9th century. He wrote more than 400 books in subjects such as, pharmacy, metallurgy, astrology, philosophy, physics and music. Mostly though, he worked in "chemistry". He did experiments, and as you know, experiments are one of the basic building blocks of the "scientific method". Of course, others at that time did not know what he did was "chemistry". Not until he wrote the book “Kitab al-Kimya” (The Book of Chemistry).
His work was translated into latin in the 12th century and thanks to him the concept of "chemistry" became prominent in science and English language earned the word "chemistry". And thanks to the many research done in this area, the developments and remedies to the problems of the human kind continued to be developed.
